District Tobacco Control Enforcement and Awareness Campaign Drive
The District Administration, in coordination with the District Tobacco Control Cell and police officials, conducted an enforcement drive near Morigaon College and other educational institutions against the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational premises under the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. The drive was led by ADC (Health) Nitisha Bora. A large quantity of tobacco products was seized for violations of the Act, and necessary action was initiated against the offenders. Shopkeepers were directed to strictly comply with the legal provisions governing tobacco sales near educational institutions.During the drive, awareness was also created among traders and the general public regarding the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the legal restrictions on the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions. ADC (Health) Nitisha Bora directed all Circle Officers to conduct regular enforcement drives across the district to ensure continued compliance with the law.As part of World No Tobacco Day observance, the District Tobacco Control Cell launched a week-long awareness campaign from May 30 to June 5. Various programmes were organized in schools, colleges, and health institutions across the district, including drawing competitions on the theme “Effects of Tobacco on Health” and slogan-writing competitions on “Tobacco and Youth”. Students from different educational institutions participated in the No Tobacco Pledge to promote a tobacco-free society.Further activities under the campaign include an awareness rally scheduled on May 31 from the Office of the Joint DHS at 9:30 a.m. and a public awareness meeting at Pobitora Haat at 11:00 a.m. to encourage greater public participation in tobacco control efforts.
